Charlottesville City Council has selected a new financial director to oversee the city’s budget.
On Monday, the council appointed Chris Cullinan as director of finance. Cullinan served as the city’s budget director from 1996 to 2001 and has more than 18 years of experience in both private and public financial management.
“I am excited to be rejoining an organization with a history of excellent financial management,” Cullinan said in a statement. “I look forward to continuing this tradition and finding ways to continuously improve the city’s finances and services to our citizens and businesses.”
Cullinan is currently the acting chief financial officer of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, which provides water and wastewater services to 1.8 million people in Maryland.
Cullinan will replace Bernard Wray when he retires at the end of the year. Wray has held the position for eight years.
Cullinan’s starting salary is set at $138,000. He is slated to begin working for the city Jan. 5.
